You just arrived to a brand new country (maybe\na brand new continent!), and you\u2019re ready to take on life in Santiago. Even\nthough you\u2019re super excited, there\u2019s a LOT going on. A lot of admin to sort\nout, a lot of boxes to check on your to-do list, and so much to explore. It can\nbe a little overwhelming. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing\u2019s for sure: you\u2019re gonna need a\nworking phone ASAP to help you get around. Using your phone from home in Chile\nisn\u2019t quite as straightforward as you might think. But don\u2019t panic! This\narticle has all the information you need to get yourself connected and using\nyour phone in Chile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, an important thing to know: since\nNovember 2018, Chile has a law that requires all foreign phones to be\nregistered in order to be used in Chile. This process is referred to as homologaci\u00f3n.\n<\/strong>Registering your phone is FREE<\/strong>, and you should not<\/strong> be\nconvinced to pay for this service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should make sure you register your phone within\nthe first 60 days of entering Chile<\/strong>. You also need to make sure your phone\nis already unlocked and ready to work in a foreign country. If this isn\u2019t the\ncase, you can often get your home network provider to unlock the phone for a\nsmall fee. If that doesn\u2019t work head to your local phone repair\/electronic\nstore (there are millions in Santiago!) to get the phone unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you got to Chile and your phone seems to be\nworking, you still need to register it<\/strong>. Sometimes you are given a small\nperiod (1 or 2 weeks) to be able to use your phone while you get set up, but\nafter this time if the phone isn\u2019t registered, it will be blocked and you won\u2019t\nbe able to use any Chilean SIM cards with it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
