Whatever you\u2019re\nlooking for, Santiago most likely has an area dedicated to exactly that kind of\nitem. But living in such a big city and with little prior knowledge of your neighborhood,\nit can be hard to know where to catch the best bargains, or which areas will\ngive you the most choice. But don\u2019t panic! We\u2019re here to help. Simply read on\nand let us give you a run-down on where to find all your Santiago essentials,\nfrom food, to clothes, to gifts and beyond. Just don\u2019t blame us when you check\nyour bank account\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The <em>Almac\u00e9n<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Almacenes<\/em> are your classic Chilean corner store. They\u2019re a great place to pick up some essentials, snacks, a palta or two and maybe an afternoon empanada. You\u2019ll likely get familiar with the almac\u00e9n closest to you, and become fiercely loyal to them when someone tries to tell you their corner store is superior. I don\u2019t think so, friend! Try not to do all your grocery shopping here, however, as almacenes can often be pricier than your average market or supermarket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Groceries<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most amazing things about living in Santiago is your access to some incredible fresh produce. Your standard supermarkets such as <em>Lider<\/em> and <em>Unimarc<\/em> are fine for your store-cupboard supplies, and the supermarket giant <em>Jumbo<\/em> is good for finding some of those products you miss from back home. One of Santiago\u2019s biggest markets right in the heart of the city, La Vega is a bustling frenzy of action and the best place to find cheap, fresh produce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go prepared for a big haul \u2013 it\u2019s often\nwise to take a small trolley or big backpack so you can stock up, plus some\nproduce bags if you have them. Bartering is not standard in Chile, plus these\nprices are as low as you\u2019ll find anywhere \u2013 so enjoy and fill your boots!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you\u2019re done with your shop, stop to\ntry an amazing Venezuelan empanada or sit down for a cheap <em>menu del dia<\/em>\nat one of La Vega\u2019s many lunch places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La Vega can be an overwhelming experience,\nso if you fancy a more chill veggie run (or maybe you had one too many <em>piscolas<\/em>\nlast night\u2026), head across the road to La Vega\u2019s little sister market <strong>Tirso\nDel Molina<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here you can still find a bunch of cheap\nfruit and veg \u2013 plus, the second floor has a ton of yummy Chilean and\nPeruvian-style eateries to reward yourself after your shop!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>La Vega Italia<\/strong> plus other smaller markets are dotted around the city for a quick\nveggie run, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled for your local <em>feria<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Clothes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clothes can be a little pricey in Chile\ncompared to your country back home, but there are plenty of places to find some\nbargains and a ton of choice when it comes to clothes shopping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mall <a href=\"https:\/\/mall.costaneracenter.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Costanera Center (opens in a new tab)\">Costanera Center<\/a><\/strong> is your go-to for all the brands and names you see back home \u2013 H&amp;M, Zara, Topshop\/Topman\u2026plus it\u2019s right off Metro Line 1 at Tobalaba, so will often be your most convenient place for some retail therapy. <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Parque Arauco (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.parquearauco.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Parque Arauco<\/a><\/strong> is another glossy mall full of the biggest Chilean department stores and <em>extranjero<\/em> imports (as well as a huge movie theatre!). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mall at <strong>Estaci\u00f3n Central, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.araucoestacion.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Arauco Estaci\u00f3n (opens in a new tab)\">Arauco Estaci\u00f3n<\/a>,<\/strong> is great to wander through, especially if you\u2019re looking for some shoe bargains or need to stock up on some cheap gym clothing. And speaking of bargain-hunting \u2013 Corona, Tricot and Fashion\u2019s Park are all stores to look out for for seriously cheap clothing (men and women). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re into thrifting,<strong> Calle Bandera<\/strong> is the place to be. Countless second-hand, vintage and thrift stores line the street, which is also worth a visit for its beautiful painted artwork that covers the roads and is popular among selfie-takers everywhere. Here\u2019s a rundown of some col gift spots:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/latiendanacional\/?hl=es-la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tienda Nacional (opens in a new tab)\">Tienda Nacional<\/a><\/strong> (Merced 369) has a whole host of Chilean-inspired gifts that are perfect to take home to friends and family. Whether it\u2019s a keychain with Chilean <em>modismos <\/em>(slang) on them, a mug featuring famous Chilean phrases (<em>Tranquilein, John Wayne!)<\/em> or some Chilean art, music or literature, this store is perfect for some authentic, quirky trinkets to take back home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Barrio Italia<\/strong> is a popular\nhotspot when shopping for gifts.
