Picture the scene. It\u2019s a sunny Saturday in Santiago<\/strong>. You decided not to escape the city this weekend \u2013 no hiking, no beaches, no getting up close and personal with nature. This weekend you want to explore a little more of the city you\u2019re calling home right now. But with so much to see, you\u2019re not quite sure where to start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Santiago<\/strong> has countless beautiful barrios<\/em> to explore, but a particularly popular place for a Saturday stroll is Barrio Lastarria<\/strong>. A tiny barrio centered around one main street, Calle Jos\u00e9 Victorino Lastarria<\/strong><\/em>, this small neighbourhood is bursting with life, art and trendy spots to relax with a coffee. The area is popular among tourists, with a few boutique hotels nestled in the area. But don\u2019t let this fool you: there are plenty of Santiago gems for new locals (like you!) to aprovechar<\/em> (take advantage of).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t want to miss the best that Lastarria<\/strong> has to offer, here\u2019s a run-down of some of the highlights to guide your perfect city weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important warning:<\/strong> Calle Jos\u00e9 Victorino Lastarria is not<\/em> a street to walk down\nif you\u2019re in a hurry. At the weekend, the street fills with a cute little feria<\/em>\nat the top of the street, where artists show off their recent work alongside\nstalls full of souvenirs and arty gifts. And that\u2019s just the official<\/em>\nmarket. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Street sellers line the rest of the road,\npromoting their hand-made fanny packs, arty notebooks, second-hand clothes and\nincense sticks. FYI: This is the perfect place to find any cute last-minute\ngifts! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slow your pace to a gentle wander and check out all the quirky things that sellers have to offer. Oh, and don\u2019t be alarmed if suddenly there\u2019s a frenzy of sellers picking up their stuff in a sheet and running off around the corner: there\u2019s probably a carabinero(local police man)<\/em> headed down the street!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eating in Barrio Lastarria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Feeling hungry? Skip the touristy\nrestaurants of Patio Lastarria and check out some of the other gems in the area.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grab an amazing brunch at Wonderland Caf\u00e9<\/a><\/strong> (Calle Rosal), choosing from a huge range of breakfast options (including a full English Breakfast, for any Brits out there!). If you have a sweet tooth, their insane \u201cDrink Me\u201d milkshakes will have you drooling. I\u2019m not kidding. Just look at this beast\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re in need of a midday snack, check out Hogs<\/a><\/strong> (Calle Merced) for a yummy and more hipster take on a Chilean hot dog. Grab a latte at Bloom<\/a><\/strong> (Calle Merced), or sit down for a Chilean empanada<\/em> at snack hotspot La M<\/a>e<\/a>nsajer\u00eda<\/a><\/strong> (Calle Lastarria). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the bottom of the street, right by Metro Universidad Cat\u00f3lica, you\u2019ll run into some of the best ice cream in Chile at Emporio La Rosa<\/a><\/strong>. This little ice cream shop is full of incredible flavours (we recommend lucuma-manjar!)<\/em>, but be warned \u2013 the queue is often out the door on weekends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your day has turned into night, there are plenty of places to grab a drink and an evening meal. Chipe Libre<\/a><\/strong> is famous for their creative cocktails made with traditional pisco<\/em> that go way beyond your average pisco sour<\/em>. Ask to sit in the back where you\u2019ll find an adorable courtyard to enjoy your drink away from the madness of the street. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holy Moly<\/a><\/strong> on Merced has some of the best burgers in town, or hit Casa Madero<\/a><\/strong> (Calle Villavicencio) for some beers and chorrillana<\/em> in this cute bar off the main street. If your family\u2019s in town or you feel like a fancy dinner, splash out on a night at Boca Nariz<\/a><\/strong>, where the food is expertly paired with some of Chile\u2019s best wines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Culture in Barrio Lastarria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But Lastarria is not just all about the\nfood. We promise. The area is full of some beautiful street art, and has a ton\nof culture to dive into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the metro you\u2019ll find the beautiful towering metal building that is the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral<\/strong> \u2013 commonly known as the GAM<\/a><\/strong>. This museum and arts centre has regular exhibits that are free to wander through, as well as a ton of theatre and dance performances regularly. Wander through the courtyard outside and stop to admire the building\u2019s structure, watch tango lessons in action, and see teens practicing their K-Pop dance moves in the mirror. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

(Bonus tip:<\/em> on Thursdays, check out the open-air salsa classes across the street from the GAM with Santiago Baila Salsa<\/a> (19:30-21:30). For just 1000 pesos, join in for a class and flex those latin rhythm muscles!) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another place to get lost in some art is the Museo de Artes Visuales<\/a><\/strong>, or MAVI<\/strong>. This tiny museum is tucked back from the street but is well worth the visit. They regularly have exhibitions designed to engage the senses, and often feature local and student projects. Make a small contribution and see what they have on offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0Whatever you\u2019re doing in Barrio Lastarria<\/strong> \u2013 whether it\u2019s shopping, eating, getting cultured, or just wandering and taking it all in \u2013 this barrio is perfect for a relaxing weekend exploring some of the amazing things Santiago<\/strong> has to offer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
